Scofield Stories Episode 3: Big Thorn Farm & Brewery

I’ve always been intrigued by creativity in all its forms and true DIY ingenuity. So, when I discovered Big Thorn Farm & Brewery, an off-grid, solar-powered, naturally-carbonating brewery and farm about a 10 minute drive from where I grew up (and where my parents still live), I had to check it out. In a big box, fast food world, the spirit of ownership of one’s craft is as refreshing as the cold craft beers enjoyed at this country farm on the prairies of Illinois. Their beers have a truly distinct, fresh feel to them that need to be experienced to be understood.

The location, craft, freshness, and full sensory experience were totally unique so I decided to make a film to share that with a broader audience. So, Nathan Cripe and I made a trip to the farm and captured great footage of the grounds and some engaging interviews. The result is this short film highlighting the concept and fascinating process behind Big Thorn Farm & Brewery.

We found Aaron & Anna to be the most welcoming and kind hosts to us and everyone visiting their farm. Big Thorn is a place where people who would probably never cross paths come together in a tremendously relaxed environment around a shared interest in quality craft beer.

Big Thorn Farm & Brewery is open to the public Saturdays and Sundays from 12-8pm (central time).
